WooCommerce runs on your own WordPress install, which means you have full file access: nothing stands between you and [yourdomain.com]/llms.txt, replacing yourdomain.com with your actual domain. The real decision on WooCommerce is not how to publish the file but whether to hand-write it or let your SEO plugin generate it.
Why WooCommerce is different
You have three legitimate options, and the wrong one is combining two of them. You can upload a hand-written file to your web root, you can switch on the llms.txt generator in Yoast SEO (free, shipped since version 25.3, customizable since 25.6), or you can enable Rank Math's LLMs Txt module. Yoast writes a physical file to your site root and, importantly, refuses to overwrite a file it did not create itself. So a hand-written file plus Yoast's generator is not a conflict; the plugin steps aside. The danger is the reverse: two generators writing two different files.
The file you are publishing
The full format lives in our llms.txt guide. This is the file itself, from a sample outdoor gear store:
# Cedar and Pine Outfitters
> Cedar and Pine Outfitters sells outdoor apparel and camping gear from its Seattle storefront, shipping across the US. Runs an in-house tent repair service and publishes beginner backpacking guides.

Steps
- Check first. Open [yourdomain.com]/llms.txt in a browser. If you see a generated file, read what is in it before deciding to replace anything.
2a. The plugin route. If you already run Yoast SEO, open SEO > Settings, find the site features section, and switch the llms.txt feature on. Yoast builds the file from your content and keeps it updated on a schedule. Since version 25.6 you can customize what it includes; do that, because the automatic selection is built from your pages, not your priorities. If you use Rank Math instead, enable its LLMs Txt module from the Rank Math dashboard and configure it under its settings. If the toggle has moved, check the plugin's current docs; plugin menus shift between versions.
2b. The hand-written route. Create llms.txt on your computer, upload it to your site's web root (the public_html/ folder, next to wp-config.php) with SFTP or your host's file manager, and do not put it in the media library, which rewrites the path.
- Review what the plugin chose. This is the WooCommerce-specific step. A generator knows your posts and pages; it does not know that your store's money pages are the product category archive, the shop page, and your shipping and returns policy. Add those yourself if they are missing, and cut the thin pages the plugin pulled in.
- Verify. Open [yourdomain.com]/llms.txt and confirm a 200 status and plain text. If both a hand-written file and a plugin file seem to exist, the plugin wins by refusing to overwrite yours; decide which one you want to keep.
The fundamentals
- •What goes in the file: your name, one-paragraph summary, and curated links with one-line descriptions, see our llms.txt guide
- •Crawler permissions live in robots.txt, never in llms.txt, see our robots.txt guide
- •The structured data behind the pages you link, see our product schema guide
A hypothetical example
Say you run a WooCommerce shop selling running gear. You switch on Yoast's generator and check the result: it lists your blog posts and about page, but your "Trail shoes" category and your returns policy are nowhere in it. You customize the file to add those two and trim three thin posts. A scan now shows a file that actually points at where shoppers spend money. The lesson is WooCommerce-wide: the generator gives you maintenance for free, but the curation is still yours.
