Squarespace does not let you place files at your domain root, and uploaded files live under a /s/ path. So the working pattern is two steps: upload llms.txt to your site, then add a URL mapping so that [yourdomain.com]/llms.txt, replacing yourdomain.com with your actual domain, permanently redirects to the uploaded file. No code, but the mapping syntax is picky.
Why Squarespace is different
The constraint is really two constraints. First, the file itself can only live at something like [yourdomain.com]/s/llms.txt; nothing on Squarespace's builder uploads to root. Second, the redirect is configured in a plain text box under Settings > Developer Tools > URL Mappings on version 7.1 (on 7.0 sites it sits under Settings > Advanced > URL Mappings), where the format is rigid: source path, then ->, then destination, then the status code, separated by single spaces. A typo there fails silently; the mapping is just ignored, and you will stare at a 404 wondering what you did wrong.
The file you are publishing
The full format lives in our llms.txt guide. This is the file itself, from a sample outdoor gear store:
# Cedar and Pine Outfitters
> Cedar and Pine Outfitters sells outdoor apparel and camping gear from its Seattle storefront, shipping across the US. Runs an in-house tent repair service and publishes beginner backpacking guides.

Steps
- Check first. Open [yourdomain.com]/llms.txt in a browser. A 404 is the expected starting point on Squarespace.
- Write and upload the file. Write your Markdown (what goes in it is covered in our llms.txt guide), then upload it to your site through the file upload in the content editor. Once uploaded, confirm it serves at [yourdomain.com]/s/llms.txt and renders as text, not as a download prompt.
- Add the URL mapping. Go to Settings > Developer Tools > URL Mappings on a 7.1 site (Settings > Advanced > URL Mappings on 7.0) and add this line exactly, on its own line:
/llms.txt -> /s/llms.txt 301
Click Save. Each mapping needs the leading slash on the source path, the -> with single spaces on each side, and the status code at the end.
- Verify. Open [yourdomain.com]/llms.txt in a browser and confirm you see your file's content. If you get a 404, recheck the mapping line character by character; format is the usual culprit.
Two things to know before you start. URL Mappings is available on Squarespace Business and Commerce plans; if you are on a Personal plan, guides on this workaround report you will need to upgrade before the mapping box is available. And if you would rather host the file outside Squarespace, the same mapping works pointed at an external URL (a public GitHub Gist raw URL is the common choice); you just update the Gist instead of re-uploading when the file changes.
The fundamentals
- •What goes in the file: your name, one-paragraph summary, and curated links with one-line descriptions, see our llms.txt guide
- •Crawler permissions live in robots.txt, never in llms.txt, see our robots.txt guide
- •The structured data behind the pages you link, see our product schema guide
A hypothetical example
Say you run a Squarespace site for a small candle brand with an online shop. You upload the file, add the mapping, and open /llms.txt: download prompt. The file uploaded fine, but the browser is treating it as an attachment rather than rendering it. You re-check and find the upload landed under a slightly different /s/ path than you typed in the mapping, so the mapping points nowhere; you fix the line to match the actual file URL and the file renders. That is the classic Squarespace round: the mechanics are two lines, and the debugging is always in those two lines.
What this guide does not cover
Whether your plan supports URL Mappings (check your billing tier before planning this route). Keeping the file current when you re-upload after catalog changes. Monitoring whether AI crawlers fetch the file or cite your site.
