How to add llms.txt to Shopify

Shopify gives you no way to place a file at your domain root, so you upload llms.txt to Content > Files and then create a URL redirect from /llms.txt to the uploaded file. A visitor (or crawler) who opens [yourdomain.com]/llms.txt, replacing yourdomain.com with your actual domain, lands on your file through that redirect. The redirect is the part that actually matters.

Why Shopify is different

Every other method fails on the root question. Shopify's theme editor has an Assets folder, but files there serve at /assets/llms.txt, not /llms.txt, and no AI tool looks there. Your file lives on Shopify's CDN (a cdn.shopify.com URL), which is fine as long as your own /llms.txt address points to it. This is a no-code job: no theme editing, no app required.

The file you are publishing

The full format lives in our llms.txt guide. This is the file itself, from a sample outdoor gear store:

# Cedar and Pine Outfitters
> Cedar and Pine Outfitters sells outdoor apparel and camping gear from its Seattle storefront, shipping across the US. Runs an in-house tent repair service and publishes beginner backpacking guides.

Steps

  1. Check whether you already have one. Open [yourdomain.com]/llms.txt in a browser (replacing yourdomain.com with your actual domain). If you see your file, you are done except for reviewing what is in it.
  1. Write the file on your computer. What goes in it lives in our llms.txt guide; the file itself is plain Markdown saved as llms.txt. Watch that your editor does not save it as llms.txt.txt.
  1. Upload it. In your Shopify admin go to Content > Files, click Upload files, and upload your llms.txt. Copy the CDN URL Shopify assigns to it.
  1. Create the redirect. Go to Online Store > Navigation, click View URL Redirects, then Create URL redirect. Set the redirect from /llms.txt to the CDN URL you copied, and save.
  1. Verify. Open [yourdomain.com]/llms.txt in a browser and confirm your Markdown loads. The address bar will show the CDN URL after the redirect; that is expected. If you want the file served directly with no redirect hop, a Cloudflare Worker or similar edge function in front of your store can serve /llms.txt with a 200, but that is a developer job.

One shortcut to know about: the Shopify App Store has apps that generate the file for you and serve it at your store's /llms.txt address automatically. They are worth a look if your catalog changes often enough that you will never update a hand-written file.

The fundamentals

  • •What goes in the file: your name, one-paragraph summary, and curated links with one-line descriptions, see our llms.txt guide
  • •Crawler permissions live in robots.txt, never in llms.txt; on Shopify that file is editable through the robots.txt.liquid template in your theme, see our robots.txt guide
  • •The structured data behind the pages you link, see our product schema guide

A hypothetical example

Say you run a Shopify store selling handmade ceramic tableware. You upload your file to Content > Files and create the redirect. Two months later you rename a collection from "Mugs" to "Cups and mugs." Your llms.txt still points at the old collection URL. The scan flags a broken link in the file, and you re-upload the corrected version. That is the entire maintenance cycle on Shopify: there is nothing automatic here unless you install an app that keeps it current.

What this guide does not cover

Keeping the file accurate as your catalog changes, which on Shopify is manual unless you use an app. Monitoring whether AI crawlers fetch the file or cite your store. The transaction layer: this file is a map, not a checkout.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I upload llms.txt directly into the Shopify root directory?
No, because Shopify does not provide root FTP access. Instead, upload the file under Content Files and configure a 301 redirect from /llms.txt to the CDN file URL.
Does a 301 redirect work for AI bots fetching llms.txt on Shopify?
Yes. Search crawlers and language models follow standard HTTP 301 redirects to fetch text files served from Shopify CDN.
What happens when I update my catalog in Shopify?
Upload the revised file to Content Files and update your URL redirect target so bots receive your latest collections and brand facts.
