# How to add product schema on BigCommerce

On BigCommerce you usually do not need to add product schema at all. Stencil themes ship Product and BreadcrumbList markup by default, and BigCommerce's own support documentation points to JSON-LD as the expected format on current Cornerstone versions. The one constraint shaping everything here is that the markup is only as complete as the data your theme can see: BigCommerce's docs note that if a product page does not display certain data, such as brand information, the corresponding schema will not be present either.

## Why BigCommerce is different

BigCommerce sits between Shopify and the open platforms. The theme renders from Handlebars templates rather than Liquid, and you edit theme files through the Stencil CLI locally (then push the theme update) or through the theme file editor in the control panel, not through a simple code editor inside the store admin. There is no app layer that routinely injects duplicate product schema the way Shopify apps do, so duplicates are less common. The failure mode here is different: incomplete markup, where the block exists but is missing fields because the theme never had the underlying data, plus a second Product block injected by a reviews app that only adds ratings.

## Steps

**1\. Check what already exists.** Open a live product page, view the page source, and search for `application/ld+json`. Confirm there is one Product block and read which fields it carries. If your theme is older or heavily customized, it may still use the older microdata format (itemscope and itemprop attributes in the HTML) instead of JSON-LD. BigCommerce's support docs treat JSON-LD as the recommended format, so a microdata-only theme is a candidate for an upgrade.

**2\. Fix completeness before touching code.** If fields are missing, check whether the underlying data is on the page first. Per BigCommerce's own troubleshooting guidance, missing product data on the page means missing schema: no brand shown, no brand in the markup. Fill in the product fields in the control panel (brand, SKU, GTIN/MPN where you have them) and recheck the source. Many "incomplete schema" problems are incomplete catalog data, not theme problems.

**3\. Edit the theme for what data cannot fix.** If the data is present on the page but absent from the markup, the product page template in your Stencil theme needs the fields added to its JSON-LD block using the theme's Handlebars product object. Do this in a local copy of the theme with the Stencil CLI and push the theme update, or use the control panel's theme file editor if your plan and theme support direct edits. If the theme is a customized third-party theme, ask the theme developer where the product JSON-LD lives before you start editing.

**4\. Reconcile the reviews app.** If a reviews app injects its own JSON-LD block carrying the aggregate rating, you now have two blocks on one page. Either extend the theme's Product block to include the rating data or let the app own the rating and make sure the two blocks do not declare conflicting prices or availability for the same product.

**5\. Validate on variant and out-of-stock pages.** Test a URL such as https://\[yourdomain.com\]/your-product/, replacing yourdomain.com with your actual domain, in Google's Rich Results Test and the Schema Markup Validator. Include a product with option-level pricing and an out-of-stock product, and confirm availability values match reality.

### A hypothetical example

Say you run an outdoor gear store on BigCommerce selling packs in multiple sizes. You check the page source and find the theme's Product block has name, price, and availability but no brand, and your reviews app adds a second block with the star rating. You find the brand field was never filled in on the products themselves, so you fill it in the control panel, confirm the theme block now carries it, and leave the reviews app's block alone because the two no longer conflict on any fact. No code edited, one audit of catalog data, duplicates reconciled.

## What this guide does not cover

This covers getting valid, complete product markup onto your BigCommerce product pages. It does not cover keeping prices and availability accurate as inventory changes (monitoring work), getting AI crawlers to your pages past caching and bot protection, or letting an agent complete the checkout, which is the transaction layer and a separate job.

## Frequently Asked Questions

Does BigCommerce provide built-in JSON-LD for products?

Yes. BigCommerce Stencil themes automatically output JSON-LD product markup on product detail pages.

How do I edit product schema in a BigCommerce Stencil theme?

Edit templates/components/products/product-view.html in your theme files to customize the embedded schema script.

How can I verify my BigCommerce product schema?

Paste your product URL into Google Rich Results Test or schema validator to inspect the parsed fields and check for warnings.
