# How long until you show up in AI answers

If a robots.txt block was the only thing standing between your site and an AI answer, the documented wait is about 24 hours: OpenAI says robots.txt changes take roughly 24 hours to take effect for search, and Perplexity and Meta say up to 24 hours. Past that, no vendor publishes a timeline. Training-data refresh cycles are undisclosed at every company, and no one publishes per-site crawl frequency. Anyone who promises you a date is guessing.

## Why the answer is "it depends"

1. The 24-hour figures cover exactly one thing: a robots.txt change taking effect. They say nothing about when a page is first crawled or first cited.
2. Live answers ride on the underlying index. Gemini is grounded on Google's index, and Copilot retrieves from Bing's. How fast Google or Bing recrawls your site is a separate, unpublished schedule.
3. Training data is a different cycle from search, and it is undisclosed everywhere. Being crawlable today and being inside the next model are different events with no published gap between them.
4. The engines that run their own crawlers, OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, and PerplexityBot, crawl on their own schedules, which no vendor publishes per site.

## What moves the needle

### 1\. Confirm the crawler is allowed and arriving

Nothing else matters until this is true. Work through the blocking diagnostic before you start the clock.

### 2\. Serve content as plain HTML

Every engine's crawler except Google's effectively skips JavaScript rendering. Pages that need JavaScript to show their content get indexed late or not at all. Content in the initial HTML is the fastest thing you control.

### 3\. Keep sitemaps fresh and request a recrawl

After a robots.txt change, request a recrawl in Google Search Console and check the page in Bing Webmaster Tools. Fresh sitemaps tell the underlying indexes what changed; the recrawl request puts your page in the queue.

### 4\. Feed the underlying index

A page Google has never indexed cannot ground a Gemini answer, and a page Bing has never indexed cannot feed Copilot. If you are invisible in Google and Bing, you are invisible to the assistants built on them.

### The fundamentals

These mechanics are shared across every engine and covered in full in their own guides:

- •Confirming the crawlers can reach you at all, see our [guide to checking whether your site blocks AI crawlers](https://aizii.ai/learn/ai-search/how-to-check-if-your-site-is-blocking-ai-crawlers)
- •The allow rules crawlers check first, see our guide to allowing AI crawlers in robots.txt
- •Every AI crawler in one reference table, see our [robots.txt guide for AI search](https://aizii.ai/learn/ai-search/how-to-write-robots-txt-for-ai-search)

### Say you run a coffee roastery

You unblock OAI-SearchBot today. OpenAI's documented figure says the robots.txt change takes about 24 hours to take effect for search. When the bot next crawls you, whether it cites you in an answer, and whether any model was trained on your content are three separate unknowns, and no vendor publishes any of them. The clock you can measure is the robots.txt one. The rest runs on crawl schedules nobody discloses.

## What this guide does not cover

This guide covers the clock. It does not cover getting cited once you are eligible, keeping the citation favorable, or the transaction layer that turns a recommendation into a sale.

## Frequently Asked Questions

Why do live search answers update faster than foundation model knowledge?

Live retrieval tools fetch current web pages in real time via search APIs, while model weights only change when a new training run is completed and deployed.

How soon after unblocking a crawler will my brand appear in live answers?

Live answer engines like ChatGPT Search and Perplexity can cite fresh pages within days once the crawler has re-indexed the URL and the edge firewall permits access.

Does submitting a sitemap speed up AI discovery?

Yes. Submitting updated sitemaps to Bing Webmaster Tools and Google Search Console accelerates discovery across the primary retrieval pipelines feeding AI assistants.
